Abdul Waheed is a leading and accomplished South African parliamentary, governmental and political affairs lobbyist, strategist, communicator and analyst, who has cultivated deep expertise, experience and a track record in all aspects of governmental, parliamentary and political affairs. This includes political risk analysis; campaign development and management; stakeholder relations; reputation management; issues management; public policy, legislative and regulatory analysis; training and capacity building.
Between 2001 – 2010 he held a number of strategic positions in the South African governmental, political, public and private sector. This includes as a Policy Analyst in the National Department of Transport; political advisor to the Mayoral Committee for Trading Services and chairperson of the ruling party caucus in the City of Cape Town; Manager in the Strategy and Planning Directorate of the City of Cape Town; General Manager of Business Unity South Africa’s Parliamentary Office and Director in the Democracy and Governance Program of the Human Sciences Research Council.
He has acquired deep experience and expertise of governmental, parliamentary and political processes and political parties, having worked with government at Presidential, Ministerial, Parliamentary, diplomatic, provincial, municipal and intergovernmental and multilateral level. He has worked with state owned companies, public entities, regulatory authorities, Constitutional bodies, international and regional development organizations. Major clients who he has consulted and provided strategic counsel to include a number of leading local and international governments, multinational corporations, local enterprises, trade and industry associations, chambers of commerce, international development organizations and NGOs.
Abdul Waheed has cultivated an extensive network of relevance in the governmental, political and public sector over many years and has participated in the formulation of a number of high-level and pioneering policy, legislative and regulatory initiatives, institutional reforms, strategy and stakeholder processes.
Regionally this includes assignments with the Economic Commission for Africa (ECA), the Pan African Parliament (PAP) and SADC Parliamentary Forum. Internationally he has participated in assignments for the United Nations Commission for Sustainable (UN-CSD), the World Bank Group, the Global Environmental Facility (GEF), the World Trade Organisation (WTO) and the Inter-Parliamentary (IPU), Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) and the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights.
Education and Qualifications
Equipped with a degree in Governance and Political Studies from the University of Cape Town, he is an inaugural Fellow of the Public Policy Partnership of South Africa (administered by the Woodrow Wilson and Andrew Mellon Public Policy Foundations, USA). He has completed the prestigious Commonwealth Country Training Program on ‘Enterprise Competitiveness and Globalization for Commonwealth Developing Economies’ in Singapore. He was previously actively involved in grassroots politics and civic affairs, including political mobilization, campaigning, youth affairs and local economic development.
